As part of the exhibition “Tra il bianco e il nero (Between Black and White)”, Lab27 will host a meeting on Sunday, October 13, with Elio Ciol. This is a unique opportunity to hear firsthand from one of the undisputed masters of Italian landscape photography. His extraordinary career spans the history of Italy, crossing the 20th century up to the present day. From the landscapes of Friuli, to portraits of the Italian poet and filmmaker Pier Paolo Pasolini—his childhood friend—to Assisi, a city with which the artist feels a deep connection.
Elio Ciol has compiled an extensive photographic collection of Italian art, architecture, landscapes, and archaeological sites, showcased in over one hundred solo exhibitions and publications. His black-and-white printing, honed over more than sixty years of practice, along with the use of infrared film, emphasizes the “incisive” role of light as a distinctive and personal stylistic hallmark. The discussion with the Casarsa-born photographer will be led by Andrea Simionato, editorial director of Antiga Edizioni.
Elio Ciol was born in Casarsa della Delizia (Pordenone) in 1929. He began working at his father’s studio at a very young age, gaining technical experience and developing a personal way of expressing himself through photography, especially regarding landscape. Always in search of new expressive dimensions, from 1955 to 1960 he was active in the “La Gondola” photographic club in Venice. In 1962, he worked as a set photographer for the films "Gli Ultimi" by Vito Pandolfi and "Padre David" by Maria Turoldo. The following year, in Milan, he collaborated with Luigi Crocenzi on the creation of the Arnaldo and Fernando Altimani Foundation for the study and language of images.
Ciol has exhibited in solo and group shows in Italy and abroad. His photographs are held in private collections and public institutions, both nationally and internationally. Throughout his long career, he has received numerous awards and recognitions. In December 2001, the New York Times dedicated a feature to him in the Arts and Leisure section. He has collaborated with major publishing houses and contributed to the production of over two hundred books. For sixty years, Elio Ciol has “written with light,” tracing a long and captivating photographic journey. He is the author of numerous photographic books.
