The Benetton Foundation, in collaboration with Lab27, presents the first cycle of three public talks, curated by Steve Bisson and Patrizia Boschiero, dedicated to exploring the possible dialogue between landscape and contemporary photography.
At the center of the discussion are three editorial case studies that have examined, through distinct methodologies and styles, the territories, histories, and visions of Northern Italy. These landscapes are sometimes marked by contradictions and environmental degradation, yet they are also rich with potential for creative interventions connected to observation and its reception. The talks will take place at the Fondazione Benetton, in the Spazi Bomben (Via Cornarotta 7, Treviso).
On Thursday, October 14 at 6:00 PM, the series begins with Saintscapes. Vedute di Lombardia / Views of Lombardy (MuseoFotografia Contemporanea–Viaindustriae Publishing, 2019): shrines, niches, frescoes, and small religious temples—home to statues and effigies of saints—dot and define the Italian landscape. For years, decades, and even centuries, these figures have watched over, guarded, and protected the territory, serving as privileged witnesses to the transformations occurring in the landscape. But what do the saints see? What do they observe from these small architectural structures?
This is the question that Claudio Beorchia, together with the Museo di Fotografia Contemporanea in Milan-Cinisello Balsamo, posed to the inhabitants of Lombardy, inviting them to explore the shrines scattered throughout the region through an extensive participatory photography project. The main task was to photograph what the saints themselves see, positioning the camera at their eye level. But the project went further: participants were asked to photograph the shrine itself, record its location, add an imaginative title, and write a description, anecdote, or personal reflection about it. Saintscapes retraces the Lombard landscape through this rich collective experience.

The discussion will feature Luigi Latini, president of the Foundation’s Scientific Committee, and the cycle’s curators, alongside the author and interdisciplinary artist Claudio Beorchia and architect Matteo Balduzzi, curator of the project and of the Museo di Fotografia Contemporanea in Milan-Cinisello Balsamo.
