The Fondazione Benetton, in collaboration with the cultural space Lab27, presents the second edition of Publishing and Landscape: Contemporary Photography as Research, a series of public talks dedicated to exploring the dialogue between landscape and contemporary photography in the editorial field and beyond.
The initiative, curated by Steve Bisson (professor and director of the Photography Department at Paris College of Art and artistic director of Lab27) and Patrizia Boschiero (coordinator of the Carlo Scarpa Prize and head of the Fondazione’s publications), features four events between October and December 2022. Each session will focus on a different editorial project, stimulating discussion on the use of photography in studying and representing landscapes.
The cycle opens on Friday, October 7 at 6:00 pm at the Bomben Spaces in Treviso with the presentation of Vesper. Rivista di architettura, arti e teoria. This journal was created and produced within the Department of Cultures of the project at the University Iuav of Venice and published by Quodlibet. Between 2019 and 2022, six volumes have been released: Supervenice, Materia-Autore, Nella Selva, Esili e esodi, Moby Dick: Avventure e scoperte, and Magic.
The session will explore the journal’s characteristics, history, and an initial assessment of this original, bilingual, multidisciplinary scientific journal, which examines the relationships between forms and processes of design and thought. Focusing on twilight, when light blends with darkness and the illuminating object is no longer visible, Vesper seeks to interpret the design act by following and making visible the motion of transformation.
Recalling and renewing the tradition of Italian print journals, Vesper hosts a rich landscape of narrative modes, embracing diverse writing styles, privileging the visual intelligence of design, graphic expression, imagery, and the interplay between different languages. Each thematic issue functions as a discourse on contemporaneity, structured through a set of columns that shed light on the theme from different angles. The sections—editorial, citation, project, narrative, interview, essay, insert, translation, archive, travel, ring, tutorial, dictionary—create shifting reflections between ideas and reality, activating the interplay between concrete evidence and its potential, transformative, and imaginary aspects. These columns are designed not to provide instant updates but to investigate design conditions and offer tools and materials with long-term relevance.
The discussion will focus in particular on the value and use of images, especially photography, in this context. Participants include Sara Marini, director of Vesper and professor of Architectural and Urban Composition; Luigi Latini, director of the Fondazione Benetton; the series curators Steve Bisson and Patrizia Boschiero; and Andrea Bianco, founder of Lab27.
