As part of the exhibition “You Are an Animal”, Lab27 will host photographer Giulia Degasperi on Sunday, March 30, at 5:00 PM.
Giulia Degasperi undertakes a journey that is not only a tribute to her Trentino roots but also explores a common tension between the rhythms of nature and city life. After moving to Berlin, she decided to return to the mountains to capture the lives of people who live and work at high altitude. This is the idea behind her documentary "These Dark Mountains", which raises many questions about escaping contemporary society.
Among the Alpine peaks, Giulia explores the dreams and hopes of those who tend the pastures, following traditional livestock movements and contributing to an ancient practice that has created one of Europe’s richest and most biodiverse landscapes. Over the course of two years, she visited various barns and farms to document the solitude and extraordinary work required to sustain a life of fresh air, steaming manure, starry skies, and close contact with animals and nature—a reciprocity as essential as it is precarious.
Giulia Degasperi is a Berlin-based photographer. She works on documentary projects, focusing primarily on marginalized communities and the landscapes they inhabit. With a focus on the intricate relationship between humanity and nature, Degasperi’s recent projects address the crucial issue of climate change and its consequences for the environment, for ourselves, and for the broader human experience. She works on personal projects while remaining open to collaborations aligned with her values, and welcomes opportunities to engage with media committed to environmental issues. In 2022, Degasperi published "These Dark Mountains".
